Copy and use a prompt

Find a saved prompt, fill in its values, copy it into your AI tool, and fix the warnings a prompt can show.

The Prompts screen holds every prompt and document you’ve saved. This page covers finding a prompt, copying it with your values filled in, and what to do about the warnings a prompt can show.

Find a prompt

  1. Click Prompts in the sidebar.
  2. Type part of the prompt’s name or text in the Search… box at the top of the list (Ctrl+F puts you there).
  3. Click the prompt in the list.

The prompt opens in the pane on the right, showing its text with fixed variables filled in. A variable that asks each time shows its default value, or its name in square brackets, until you fill it in when you copy. To switch the list between cards and rows, use the Tile view and List view buttons next to the search box. In List view, the Kind column says what each item is: Static Prompt, Dynamic Prompt or Markdown (see Static prompts, dynamic prompts and documents). For sorting and filters, see Find anything.

Copy a prompt

  1. Click the prompt in the list on the Prompts screen.
  2. Click Copy to Clipboard at the bottom of the right-hand pane.
  3. If the Fill in your values window opens, type your values and click Copy (see Fill in your values).
  4. Paste into your AI tool with Ctrl+V.

When it works, the button shows Copied for a moment. You can also click anywhere on a prompt’s text in the pane (a document’s text isn’t clickable), or press Ctrl+Shift+C while the prompt or document is open.

What gets copied:

The text goes onto the clipboard in two forms at once. Apps that keep formatting, such as Word, Google Docs or Slack, get bold, italic, colors and lists. Plain-text boxes, such as most AI chat boxes, get plain text with list markers kept.

A Markdown document copies differently: its text is copied exactly as written, as plain text, with nothing filled in. See Markdown documents and Skills.

Fill in your values

Some variables ask for a value each time you copy (see Variables). When a prompt uses one, Copy to Clipboard opens Fill in your values first.

The Fill in your values window with the last value in the box and earlier values as buttons under it, next to a Clear button. The Fill in your values window with the last value in the box and earlier values as buttons under it, next to a Clear button.

  1. Type a value in each box. Each box is labeled with the variable’s name.
  2. Press Enter to move to the next box. Shift+Enter starts a new line inside a box.
  3. Click Copy (or press Enter in the last box).

What’s in the boxes when the window opens:

  • The value you used last time for that variable, if you’ve used it before.
  • Otherwise the variable’s default value, if it has one.
  • If the variable offers a list of choices, the box is a drop-down (when only values from the list are allowed), or a text box with a button that opens the list. See Offer a list of choices.
  • Other values you’ve used recently show as buttons under the box. Click one to use it. Clear, next to the variable’s name, forgets the remembered values for that variable.

If you leave a box empty, the line under it says what’s copied instead: the variable’s name in square brackets (for example [audience]) when it has no default, or nothing when it has one. Nothing is required: Copy always works.

If the prompt has a character limit, the window shows how many characters the copied text will have. Going over the limit shows a warning, but you can still copy.

Cancel (or Esc) closes the window and copies nothing. Values are remembered only after a copy, and only on this PC. To stop PromptMason remembering them, click Settings in the sidebar, then Privacy & security, and turn off Remember values on this computer.

A variable used twice in a prompt is asked for once.

Copy only some of a prompt’s blocks

For a dynamic prompt with two or more blocks, you can copy some of its blocks and leave out the rest.

  1. Click the prompt in the list on the Prompts screen.

  2. Click the small down-arrow button to the right of Copy to Clipboard.

  3. Under Copy selected blocks, untick the blocks you don’t want. All of them start ticked.

  4. Click the Copy button under the list. It says how many blocks you ticked, for example Copy 2 of 4.

  5. If Fill in your values opens, fill it in and click Copy.

The blocks are copied in the prompt’s order, with their headers. Your ticks stay while the prompt stays open in the pane.

Warnings under a prompt

Under the prompt’s text, the pane can show these warnings. None of them stops you copying.

Change a prompt

From the right-hand pane, click the pencil at the top:

Double-clicking a prompt in the list does the same.

Run a prompt in Chat

To run a prompt with AI inside PromptMason, click Chat & Browse in the sidebar, pick the prompt in the panel on the right, and click Run in chat. Variables are filled in first, the same way as when you copy. You need the Chat feature on and an AI provider set up. See Run prompts in Chat.

Download a Markdown document

Markdown documents can be saved as a .md file.

  1. Click the document in the list on the Prompts screen.
  2. Click Download .md at the bottom of the right-hand pane.
  3. Choose where to save the file.

You can also right-click the document in the list and click Download .md.

If Copy opens “Your library is paused”

While your library is paused, nothing can be copied out of PromptMason. You can still view and search your prompts. See When your library is paused for the ways out.
