Comments

Add, edit and delete comments about a block, prompt or document in the Comments panel.

Comments are notes about a block, prompt or document, kept beside it in the Comments panel. Use them for anything you want to remember about an item, such as where you used it or what to try next. Comments are never part of the text you copy.

Comments or hidden notes

PromptMason has two ways to keep notes, and they work differently:

  • Comments are kept in the Comments panel, apart from the text. You add them with a button and they show with a name and a date.
  • Hidden notes are written inside the text of a block or prompt, as {{! like this }}. They stay in the text where you put them, and are taken out when the text is previewed or copied. See Formatting, block headers and hidden notes.

This page is about comments.

Where the Comments panel is

The panel sits at the bottom of the middle pane, headed Comments, or Comments (3) when an item has three:

  • On the Blocks screen, under the list, while a block is selected.
  • On the Prompts screen, under the list, while a prompt or document is selected.
  • On the Build screen, under the middle pane, once the prompt or document has been saved. A new, unsaved prompt has no comments yet.

Click the heading to open or close the panel. To see more comments at once, drag the panel’s top edge up. It can take up to half the pane.

Comments are a feature you can show or hide. If you don’t see the panel, click Settings in the sidebar, then Features, and turn on Comments. Turning it off hides the panel but keeps your comments.

Open the panel by default

The panel starts closed each time you select an item. To have it start open:

  1. Click Settings in the sidebar, then Features.
  2. Under Comments, turn on Expand comments by default.

Add a comment

  1. Select the block, prompt or document.

  2. Click + (Add comment) on the right of the Comments heading.

  3. In the first box, type your name if you want it shown. It starts with the last name you used on this PC; clear it to leave the comment unsigned.

  4. Type your comment.

  5. Click Save. It works once the comment has some text.

With no comments yet, the open panel says No comments yet — be the first to add one.

The comment shows in the panel with your name (or Anonymous if you left the name empty), and the date and time. Long comments show their first two lines.

Edit a comment

  1. Click the comment in the panel.
  2. Change the text, or the name.
  3. Click Save.

An edited comment shows (edited) after its date.

Delete a comment

  1. Click the comment in the panel.
  2. Click Delete.
  3. Click Delete again to confirm.

Deleting a comment can’t be undone: it doesn’t go to Recently deleted.

Comments in a team library

In a team library, everyone in the library sees an item’s comments. There’s no name box: each comment shows the name of the library member who last saved it, from the library’s member list. See Team libraries.

What happens to comments

  • Copying an item. A copy made with Copy in a list doesn’t get the original’s comments.
  • Moving an item to another folder or library keeps its comments.
  • Export. Export everything covers your personal library, so it includes the comments on items there. A team library’s comments go with that library; an owner can export it (see Export or import a team library). See Export and import.
  • Paused library. While your library is paused you can read and delete comments, but not add or change them. See When your library is paused.

If comments don’t load

If the panel shows Could not load comments., select another item and then the same item again. If it keeps happening, close and reopen PromptMason.

I want to leave notes on my prompts in PromptMason about what works and what doesn't. Show me how to add, edit and delete comments, and explain how they differ from hidden notes in the text.
